We are committed: 81% of us plan to stay with our jobs until we retire. 40% of us have been with our current employer for at least 10 years.
We are experienced: 42% of us have more than 10 years of experience.
We are educated: 54% of us have completed some college; 29% have completed trade, vocational, secretarial, or technical training.
We are well-trained: 20% of us regularly take classes or exams to stay in our jobs. Over half of us have earned a special certificate or license for our jobs, have taken particular coursework, and/or have college credits.
We are caring: 48% of us provide care to students with special needs.
We are protective: 80% of us have responsibility for ensuring student and staff safety; it is the central duty of our jobs for 40% of us.

Over the past two decades, NEA's K-12 ESP membership has grown steadily. In 1979, we numbered just over 10,000. In 2000, there were over 300,000 of us (an annual compounding growth rate of 18%). We represent 14% of the nation's 2.1 million ESP.
